Motivation Hack

Handwritten note that reads : "And when I'm proofreading after I'm done writing the story, I can't tell which parts I wrote when I was inspired and which parts I wrote when I was uninspired. It all reads like Gaiman."

When my motivation is low and I feel uninspired, I think about Neil Gaiman.

I was lucky enough to be in Edmonton when the Edmonton Public Library invited the author to their “Forward Thinking Speaker Series” in 2018. He ran what amounted to a live AMA. One of the questions was: “Do you write on days when you don’t feel inspired?”

His answer was that he writes: every day. Every single day, he writes. Sometimes a little. Sometimes more.

And when he reviews it all, it all reads like Gaiman.

It’s the reminder I need to get started. I do what I can once I do. Sometimes, I’ll write a little. Sometimes, I’ll create tons. And I can always trust that in the end, it’ll always just be me.
